Warwick Junction is a vibrant street trading area situated in the primary transport hub in South Africa’s east coast city of Durban. It is where a small dedicated team of local authority officials, street traders and their leaders worked for more than a decade tackling what seemed insurmountable urban management and design challenges. The contents contained on this site, draw on the book and photographic exhibition entitled Working in Warwick launched in Durban in late June 2009 and shows that it is possible to include street trading in urban plans in a way that adds to the vibrancy and attraction of cities. Working in Warwick aims to give practical ideas to street trader organisation leaders, local authorities, planners, architects and built environment professionals as they deal with the challenges and opportunities presented by the informal economy but also to ‘re-imagine’ the informal economy for the public at large. In February 2009 the eThekwini (Durban) Municipality announced that it will build a shopping mall in the middle of Warwick - a plan that threatens the livelihoods the nearly 8000 street traders working there as well as an international best practice of street trader management and support. This site is also a platform to debate these plans.
